Which Vaccines Should I Consider This Fall?

From flu to RSV, ASEBP’s pharmacist shares the key vaccines to keep on your radar and how ASEBP supports your coverage.

Vaccines play an important role in protecting health at every age. They lower the risk of infection, reduce serious complications leading to hospitalization, and help protect those who are most vulnerable. While children, frequent travellers, and people with chronic conditions often have specific vaccine needs, adults over 50 face unique risks as their immune systems naturally weaken with age.

Vaccines throughout life

National and provincial guidelines recommend vaccines for different groups, including:

  • Children and infants for early protection against serious illnesses like measles and polio.
  • Adults with chronic conditions or weakened immune systems.
  • Pregnant individuals to protect both parent and baby.
  • Frequent travellers who may encounter diseases not common in Canada.
  • Older adults (50+) who are more likely to face complications from respiratory infections.

While recommendations vary, the goal is the same: to protect your health and reduce the risk of preventable disease.

Making the best decision for your health

The decision to receive vaccines is personal, but reviewing credible information and speaking with your health care provider can help you understand which vaccines are right for you. Vaccines are not only about preventing illness—they can also support your independence, quality of life, and peace of mind.

Important vaccines to consider

Vaccines play a key role in preventing serious illness. While they benefit people at every age, they are especially important for older adults, who face a higher risk of serious complications—particularly from infections that affect the lungs. For older adults, the most common vaccine-preventable diseases include:

  • Influenza (flu)
  • Pneumonia
  • COVID-19
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

What is new in 2025?

COVID-19: Three vaccines are approved in Canada: Comirnaty (Pfizer), Spikevax (Moderna), and Nuvaxovid.

  • Some health conditions may qualify you for a free COVID-19 vaccine from the province. Check your eligibility before booking your appointment at https://www.alberta.ca/coronavirus-info-for-albertans. Free COVID-19 vaccines are available to eligible Albertans starting October 1, 2025.
  • For those not eligible, COVID-19 vaccines will be available to all Albertans for $100 per dose through public health clinics starting October 20, 2025.  They will also be offered at community pharmacies with an additional injection fee that may vary.

RSV: Three vaccines are approved in Canada—Abrysvo, Arexvy, and mResvia.
